Brentwood is an upscale Los Angeles neighborhood that’s used to celeberties (starting with long time resident OJ Simpson), but when relative newcomer Neve Campbell walks into The Coffe Bean on San Vicente Boulevard late one afternoon, she still manages to turn heads among the locals.
Some probably recongize her as Julia Salinger from Party of Five. Others notice her simply because she is strikingly beautiful. Causually elegant in a big black top over slim pants, she’s a study in contrasts. On television she’s all eyes and lips and brooding adolescent angst. In person, Campbell is a bubbly, stylish young woman. And in a town where Blonde Rules, her hair is almost black, yet without the sultry connotations of the Brunette sterotype. And though she displays a top-notch Hollywood-movie butsline as an ugly-duckiling-turned-swan in “The Craft” cleavage is not her style on screen or off.
That movie, about four teenage witches, led the box office when it opened in May (beating out Sharon Stone in “The Last Dance”), but even as part of a nasty coven, Campbell still managed to radiate a wholesome sweetness. Her latest movie, “Scream”, is also a horror flick, but this time it’s a spoof from director Wes Craven, co-starring Drew Barrymore and Courtney Cox. Shot early this summer, before the third season of Party of Five began and due out in January. It’s all part of a career plan in which Campbell hopes to stretch further than the teenager she plays on PARTY.
“I defintley want to play someone my age,” says Campbell 22, over a large coffee.
“I love the roles, and there’s a lot work with them when you’re playing a young character because there’s a lot of vulnerability. But I don’t want to be seen only as Julia or pigeonholed as a 16 or 17 year old.”
Besides doing movies during her time off from the show, Campbell is a tireless campaigner in promoting Party of Five -and herself.
